Running Your First London Marathon?

Globetrotting athlete David Lewis has run over 900 marathons all over the world, including 42 London events. David was part of Team HMSTC at last year’s London Marathon.  Here’s David’s step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your first London Marathon.

  • Image - David Lewis running London Marathon for Team HMSTCDon’t panic: You have plenty of time. You can do it!
  • Think about your goal: Is it just to complete the course or to achieve a time?
  • Aiming to achieve a time is a great goal: It is important to set a time goal that is realistic and achievable.
  • You’re starting a journey that will have many highs but there will be some challenges too. For example injury niggles and family/work demands need to be taken into consideration.
  • Training and how to make it fun and not a chore: There will be times when you are unable to train. This can cause anxiety and stress. If you have been running and exercising regularly, missing some sessions will not be a problem. It is amazing how the body recovers.
  • Buy a good pair of running shoes designed for long-distances. I use Asics Kayano.
  • Don’t be scared of what is ahead. The thought of running 26 miles/42k can be overwhelming. Your confidence will grow as you progress through the journey, It’s achievable and the feeling when you cross the finishing line is amazing!
  • Download a training programme that works for you, but don’t be ruled by it. If you miss some runs it doesn’t matter.
  • Find a running buddy: It is much easier and safer to run with someone else.
