World Beater David
Meet a man who has literally run all around the world. Herts MS Therapy supporter David Lewis, known to the charity as Mr Marathon, will once again be running and raising money for our charity in this year’s London Marathon, to be held on Sunday April 26. He will also be running the Brighton Marathon on April 12.
At the time of writing it will be David’s 955th marathon. “That equates to 24,910 miles, so I have run just over the circumference of the world,” said David, who is originally from Welwyn Garden City.
He first competed in the London Marathon in 1983 when he was 28 years old. Now residing in Littlehampton, west Sussex, he celebrated his 70th birthday two years ago and planned to take it easy. But that hasn’t happened.
“I’ve recently run marathons in Istanbul and Lanzarote. My pal Darren Winter and myself also ran, jogged and walked Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, across the Lake District and Yorkshire Moors, following the coastline to Hull. In other words 325 miles in 10 days.”
However David admits the running is getting harder. “My days of running fast marathons are over. I have no plans to reach the magic 1,000 marathons, but it might happen.”
The globetrotter has also run marathons in Toronto, France and Singapore (twice), Portugal, Italy, Malaysia (three times) and Thailand (twice). David lists Rio de Janeiro, Honolulu, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Vietnam, Toronto Waterfront and Perth as some of his favourite marathon destinations.
But David’s not only interested in running in exotic, faraway places. He’s also run around Brighton’s football ground 62 times, completed 82 laps of Shepton Mallet prison and run 365 miles from Worthing to Scarborough in 12 days just for the fun of it!
