Altus Basson running for Team 2025 London MarathonAltus Basson enjoyed his first London Marathon in 2023 so much he has already signed up to run in this year’s event and raise money for the Herts MS Therapy Centre.

Altus, originally from Cape Town, South Africa, and now living in Chingford, has fond memories of the event: “I knew the London Marathon was big, but it surpassed my expectations. The event was so well organised and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing.

“No matter how you try and prepare for it the amount of spectators en route comes as a shock. I usually run wearing headphones, but not this time. Just thinking back gives me goosebumps!”

Altus moved to the UK in 2006 and is an assistant headteacher at Raynham Primary School in Edmonton. He is married to Suleen and they have an 11-year-old son Zander.

“My interest in running began in 2021 with the Couch to 5k plan. Soon after I took part in the Vitality London 10,000, Asics London 10k and then the Big Half in 2022. I now really enjoy running and find it improves my mental health and well-being.”

Altus also enjoys cycling, rugby and cricket – he and Zander are members at Chingford Cricket Club. “The club is very welcoming and the children and parents have developed great friendships. The club and coaches promote respect, discipline and sportsmanship but most of all to have fun and enjoy the ‘beautiful game’”.
