London couple Monju and Alamin Ali are making their debut in next year’s London Marathon on April 21. Not only is it their first marathon but the first time a married couple have run together for Herts MS Therapy Centre.
As well as receiving lots of support from family and friends, the couple’s biggest fans are daughters Quaisara, 17 and Aaliya, 12. Monju’s brother-in-law Chris Knapp is also running to raise money for the charity. “Chris saw an article in his local Welwyn paper saying that the charity had some places available, so we all decided to sign up,” Monju, a PA in Liverpool Street, explained.
When she’s not busy keeping fit Monju likes to paint and visit exhibitions in London. “I obtained a degree in Fine Art and although I didn’t pursue a career in art I love to paint and draw.” She lists her favourite artists as Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet and Picasso.
“I hated running and jogging until a few years ago when I decided to give it a go. It became a goal for me to master and, being a pretty persistent person, I continued. There’s also been lots of running-based fundraisers and competitions at work, which have motivated me a lot, though nothing quite like a marathon. Mastering the breathing technique was the turning point.”
Alamin, who works as an engineering manager in Old Street, isn’t daunted by running for 26.2 miles: “I love keeping fit and I’ve been working out regularly since my uni days. Living near Epping Forest means we both have plenty of space to train.” Alamin is also a big football fan. “I support Liverpool. My dad and brother support them too. I guess you could say it’s our family team.”
The couple, who live in Woodford Green, love to travel and list Thailand, Bali and Sri Lanka as their favourite destinations.
“We’re so happy to be taking part in the 2024 London Marathon,” Monju explained. “This is something Alamin and myself have always wanted to do. Seeing as we’re not getting any younger, we didn’t see any reason not to do it next year. We’re really pleased to be raising money for such a great charity and supporting the many customers who rely on the regular oxygen therapy sessions they supply.”
