Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia Gravis is a rare, long term condition that can affect anyone. It causes muscles to weaken – usually the muscles that are controlled voluntarily such as facial muscles, neck and limbs.
It is estimated that 12,000 people across the UK and Ireland have Myasthenia Gravis. It is caused when the antibodies that usually fight infection block the communication system between the brain the movement muscles. This results in the muscles becoming tighter and weaker (as they are not moving as much as they would normally).
Tiredness affects the severity of the symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis. People often experience more severe symptoms as they get tired – at the end of the day, for example.
