Lyme Disease and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you can get from the bite of an infected tick – tiny spider-like creatures often found in grassy or woodland areas across the UK.
Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but if one does and it bites you, it can pass on the bacteria that cause the illness. If caught early, it’s usually treatable. However it can sometimes be tricky to diagnose, and if left untreated, it can cause long-term problems.
Symptoms of Lyme Disease
The most well-known early sign is a bullseye-shaped rash (called erythema migrans) – but not everyone gets this. Other symptoms can show up days or even weeks after a tick bite, and they can be quite flu-like.
Common symptoms include:
- A circular rash, often red and gradually spreading
- Tiredness and feeling generally unwell
- Muscle aches or joint pain
- Headaches
- Fever or chills
- Neck stiffness
In more advanced cases people can experience nerve pain, facial paralysis, memory issues or heart palpitations.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Lyme Disease
Oxygen Therapy – particularly Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – is being explored as a complementary treatment for people with Lyme disease, especially in longer-term or persistent cases.
Possible benefits for people with Lyme disease:
- Boosting the immune response – higher oxygen levels may help the body fight bacteria more effectively.
- Helping repair tissue, which can be useful in managing long-term inflammation or nerve issues.
- Improving energy – some people report reduced fatigue and brain fog after sessions.
‘HBOT can be used to treat Lyme disease and is most specifically effective against neurological Lyme. The reason it is so effective was discovered in a 1998 study that found that by exposing spirochetes to oxygen they are weakened and can die off.’ (Project Lyme 2022)
