Bladder Infections and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What is a Bladder Infection?
A bladder infection – also known as cystitis – is a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI). It happens when bacteria (usually from the gut) get into the bladder and start causing problems.
It’s more common in women than men, but anyone can get one. It’s usually not serious if treated quickly, but if left untreated, it can spread to the kidneys.
Symptoms of Bladder Infections
The symptoms of a bladder infection can show up suddenly and vary a bit, but the most common ones include:
- A burning feeling when you wee
- Needing to wee more often than usual
- Feeling like you can’t wait to go (urgency)
- Pain or pressure in your lower tummy
- Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
- Sometimes, blood in your wee
- Feeling tired or a bit unwell – possibly with a slight fever
Bladder infections are usually straightforward to treat, especially if caught early.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Bladder Infections
‘Hyperbaric oxygen is able to effectively oxidise and remove harmful toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, and viruses, which are all often present with interstitial cystitis. The bacteria that are associated with interstitial cystitis thrive in low oxygen. But these bacteria are poisoned and killed by high levels of pressurised oxygen.’ The Oxford Center.
Oxygen Therapy is especially helpful when treating chronic radiation-induced cystitis. (The Lancet, 2025)
