Alzheimer’s and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, a condition that slowly affects the brain. People with Alzheimer’s find it harder to remember things, think clearly and manage everyday tasks. It’s a progressive condition, meaning it tends to get worse over time.

It mostly affects people over 65, but younger people can get it too (this is called early-onset Alzheimer’s). In the UK, around 982,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s. This is expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040 (Alzheimer’s Society). It doesn’t just affect the person with the condition, but also their families, carers, and loved ones.

What are the Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s can vary, especially in the early stages, but the most common ones include:

  • Memory loss – especially short-term memory (like forgetting names or recent conversations)
  • Getting confused easily – including about time or place
  • Difficulty finding the right words
  • Struggling with day-to-day tasks – like cooking or managing bills
  • Changes in mood or behaviour – such as becoming withdrawn, anxious, or irritable
  • Poor judgement or decision-making

As the disease progresses, symptoms can become more severe, affecting speech, mobility and the ability to recognise loved ones.

Can Oxygen Therapy Help People with Alzheimer’s?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is being researched as a potential way to support brain health. A study involving 847 participants and published in 2024 concluded, “hyperbaric oxygen is an effective and safe intervention for the treatment of AD [Alzheimer’s Disease].”

In HBOT, a person breathes in pure oxygen under gentler pressure. This helps deliver more oxygen to the brain and body, which may support healing and reduce inflammation.

Possible benefits for people with Alzheimer’s may include:

  • Improved blood flow to the brain
  • Reduction in brain inflammation – which plays a role in dementia
  • Better energy levels and alertness
  • Support for memory and concentration
