Tinnitus and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the name for hearing sounds that aren’t caused by anything outside your body. Around 1 in 7 people in the UK experience tinnitus at some point in their lives.

Most people describe it as ringing, buzzing, humming, or even a whooshing sound in the ears. It can come and go or stick around all the time — and while it’s not usually a sign of anything serious, it can be incredibly annoying or even distressing.

Symptoms of Tinnitus

Tinnitus symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. You might hear:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • Hissing
  • Whistling
  • Clicking
  • Throbbing or pulsing sounds

These sounds can be in one ear, both, or even feel like they’re in your head. For some people, it’s just a quiet background noise. For others, it can be loud, constant, and hard to ignore — especially at night or when it’s quiet.

Tinnitus can also lead to:

  • Sleep problems
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling low or frustrated

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Tinnitus

HBOT (known as Oxygen Therapy) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, which allows your body to take in more oxygen than normal. This can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Potential benefits for people with Tinnitus include:

  • Increased oxygen supply to the inner ear – which may help with healing.
  • Reduced inflammation – especially if tinnitus was triggered by an injury or infection.
  • Improved blood flow – which could benefit hearing and nerve function.

Research shows Oxygen Therapy can be beneficial for people with Tinnitus. It mostly helps people who are treated quickly after the onset of Tinnitus. (Undersea Hyper Med, 2016)
