Cellulitis and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a common skin infection caused by bacteria getting into your skin through a cut or crack. This makes the area red, swollen, and tender. If cellulitis isn’t treated quickly, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, like the blood, muscles and bones.

Symptoms of Cellulitis

Cellulitis usually appears on the lower legs, but it can happen anywhere on your body. The common symptoms are:

  • Redness: The infected area turns red and can get bigger over time.
  • Swelling: The skin gets swollen, tight, shiny, and hurts to touch.
  • Warmth: The infected spot might feel warm or hot compared to the rest of your skin.
  • Pain: It can be tender or hurt, especially when you press on it.
  • Fever: You might get a fever, which means the infection is spreading.
  • Blisters: Sometimes, blisters or pus-filled bumps form.
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes: The lymph nodes near the infected area might swell up and hurt.

You can feel tired and weak as your body fights the infection.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cellulitis

Medical professionals conducted a study into treating patients with cellulitis with hyperbaric oxygen. This involved treating some cellulitis patients with intravenous antibiotics and wound care. The other patients received additional hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Those people receiving Oxygen Therapy experienced:

  • better pain relief,
  • reduced inflammation, and
  • faster healing.
