Headaches and Migraine

Over 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. Whilst this makes them one of the most common health complaints, headaches are not usually serious and are easily treated. (This usually involves ‘over the counter’ painkillers, rest and lifestyle choices.)

A migraine is usually a moderate or severe headache felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Many people also have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light or sound. Migraine is a common health condition, affecting around one in every five women and around one in every 15 men. (NHS)

A cluster headache is characterised by one-sided pain, although for some people the side can vary from time to time. The pain is usually centred over one eye, one temple or the forehead. It can spread to a larger area making diagnosis harder. (The Migraine Trust)

Oxygen Therapy for Headaches

It has been shown that oxygen causes a marked decrease in cerebral blood flow that is coincident with the reduced degree of pain in cluster headaches. (National Headache Foundation)
