Diabetes

Diabetes is a common life-long health condition. There are 3.5 million people diagnosed with Diabetes in the UK and an estimated 549,000 people who have the condition, but don’t know it. (Diabetes UK)

There are two main types of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
  • Type 2 Diabetes – where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90% of all adults with diabetes have Type 2. (NHS)

Oxygen Therapy helps many people with Diabetes

Research conducted in 2012 showed that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy breathing pure oxygen in a gently pressurised oxygen chamber could alter the response of the immune system to the development of diabetes.

Breathing pure oxygen under gentle pressure gets more oxygen into the bloodstream than usual. This can accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Oxygen Therapy can be particularly helpful in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers. Even the most stubborn of diabetic foot ulcers, for example when there is a risk of amputation.

This is because Oxygen Therapy can help to:

  • Accelerate healing
  • Reduce pain
  • Increase energy
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Combat infection

Mark Boscher is the Chief Executive at Herts MS Therapy Centre.  He has a particular interest in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Diabetes because he has Type 2 and has used Oxygen a great deal to help manage the effects of his own diabetes. He says: “I am certain that oxygen therapy is helping me manage my diabetes.  It has had a profound impact on the level of pain I experience.
“I have no doubt that it has significantly reduced the pain in my toes and feet from diabetic peripheral neuropathy.  I think Oxygen Treatment not only improves circulation pumping blood better to the extremities like the  toes but I understand it can enable the  creation of new tiny micro blood vessels which deliver blood to areas not receiving enough.
“I know that when I stop doing Oxygen Treatment once a week, the pain comes back and when I start again, the pain reduces significantly. I urge anyone with diabetes (or peripheral neuropathy from other causes) to see if it helps them too.

“Don’t just sit there. Do something. You can contact me now to discuss this, if you wish. Go on! I’d be glad to hear from you on 01462 684 214.”
